Heritage Dialogues: Cultural Heritage and Building Renovations
The European Heritage Hub will host its fifth Heritage Dialogues webinar, ‘Cultural Heritage and Building Renovation: Aligning the EPBD and Affordable Housing Objectives’ on 3 December 2025 from 10:00 to 12:00 CET.
The webinar is set to highlight the role of cultural heritage in climate action, with a special emphasis on the European Commission’s Energy Performance for Building Directive (EPBD), cultural heritage, and the EU’s affordable housing agenda. While the revised EPBD aims to make Europe’s building stock climate-neutral by 2050, its implementation also presents potential challenges for Europe’s cultural heritage.
Historic buildings and traditional urban fabric — when renovated with care and foresight — can contribute meaningfully to affordable housing, social cohesion, and the circular economy. Their adaptive reuse through upgrading and integration into local communities support sustainable development goals and offer alternatives to demolition or urban sprawl. Research has shown that upgrading buildings is more climate friendly than demolition and new energy-efficient buildings. This webinar will therefore explore how historic buildings can be part of the solution to the climate and housing crises — if supported by enabling policies and holistic approaches.
Join the webinar to:
- Learn about the main elements of the revised EPBD relevant to historic buildings and their renovation.
- Discuss how cultural heritage can contribute to the EU’s strategy for affordable, sustainable housing.
- Explore the current national renovation plans and housing policies from a heritage perspective.
- Discover good practices in adaptive reuse of historic buildings for social and affordable housing.
- Formulate recommendations for more coherent and inclusive renovation policies.
This webinar is free-of-charge but registration is compulsory. Register by 2 December to secure your place.
