About Heritage and Tourism
The attraction that heritage has for people is important for preserving spaces and for further development. Tourism can be a tool for providing funds needed to preserve heritage.
Through tourism, heritage contributes to education and identity building, and thus enriches society. For (world) heritage sites, tourism can be a blessing, but also quite often, a curse. One site wonders how to attract tourists, while other sites struggle to manage the influx.
This complex subject requires knowledge of (world) heritage sites, best practices, unique selling points, local do's and don'ts, education and presentation techniques, tourist behavior, and more. ICOMOS experts are therefore well-suited to lend their experience towards this sort many-faceted challenge. In order to optimally use the expertise within the ICOMOS network, ICOMOS Netherlands has identified Heritage and Tourism as one of the focus themes for the coming years.
